Art lovers seek inspiration on trip to Brisbane Portrait Prize

The art lovers among our Brookland residents were in their element on our trip to the Brisbane Portrait Prize. 

The visit to the exhibition was a big hit, especially with members of the ‘Colours with Kate’ art group, who have been doing some portraits of their own recently. 

The Brisbane Portrait Prize, on display at the State Library of Queensland, showcases the best in contemporary portraiture, and tells the stories of the courageous, creative, and passionate people who make up our city.  

This year, artists were inspired by reflections of the past as well as looking to the future. Some reference the greats of Renaissance art, while others critique how AI impacts the creative realm.   

First Nations artists continue to add significantly to the conversation, through exploration of cultural connection, commitment to country, and the enduring impact of colonisation.   

Lifestyle Concierge Kate Chapman, who runs our art group, said it was a fabulous exhibition. 

“We all enjoyed the trip, not just members of the art class,” she said.

“We were lucky to have a guided tour of the various portraits by Brisbane artists, including impressive works from local junior artists,” she said. 

“We then made our way over to the Queensland Art Gallery cafe for coffee and cake, followed by more art appreciation, as well as watching preparations for the upcoming Asia Pacific Triennial. 

“Special thanks to Matteo for a safe and enjoyable round trip on the Brookland bus!” 

Portraits painted by members of ‘Colours for Kate’ are on display in one of our corridors, as part of our 40th anniversary celebrations.
