Get the scoop on doing retirement right

What a turnout! Were you one of the 140 retirees who joined us for a special Doing Retirement Right information event at Brookland Robertson on Saturday, February 25?

If so, we hope you and your family gained a wealth of valuable insights from our panel of experts and are now ready to embrace the next chapter of your golden years, doing retirement the right way.

Hosted by TV legend and seniors advocate, Kay McGrath, visitors discovered tips and insight to everything needed for an easy transition into retirement, including care and support options available, what to look for when selecting a retirement village, contracts, and finance considerations.

Kay also shared her inspiring philosophy on ageing and left attendees excited for their future retirement journey.

Also on hand were Reside Communities CEO Glen Brown and Group Operations Manager Craig Syphers along with LifePath Financial Planning Advisor Brad Monk; Millerson Dufek Lawyers Principal Nica Millerson and Five Good Friends CEO & Co-Founder Simon Lockyer.

In case you missed it, here’s some of the highlights from the day:

Brand Monk of LifePath Financial Planning said; “When coming to a financial planner be sure to first consider how much money you are going to spend and how much money you can leave to the children (if you want to) and then you can begin to set up a plan.”

Simon Lockyer of Five Good Friends said; “The key determinant to a long, happy and healthy life is actually friendships. It’s really important to keep people connected to friends, families and the communities you love.”

Nica Millerson of Millerson Dufek Lawyers said; “When looking for a retirement home, it’s important to look at personal and practical things. What are the monthly fees and what facilities can you use while you’re there? What does the exit fee look like? It’s really important to get that advice and make sure what you’re signing up for is what you are happy with, and you have an understanding of everything you are signing up to.”

Craig Syphers and Glen Brown of Reside Communities discussed the importance of being supported in retirement, in a holistic way that considers your mental, emotional and physical wellbeing.
“It is very important in this next stage of your retirement years is focused on wellness. The second thing you should look at is location. Try to find one within 10km of where you live because generally that is where your family and friends are. Community is everything.” Glen said.
“We are all about people. When it comes to how we handle the process of people moving in, we’re quite thorough. We have a program from the moment the village manager meets the resident up until 12-18 months after moving in. This process happens in the background and is to ensure all the little things come together to make the residents’ life in the village as smooth and enjoyable as possible.” Craig said.

As an extension of our philosophy of listening and understanding the needs of retirees, participants were encouraged to quiz the panel, while also gaining valuable insight into the culture and “people-first” approach to retirement living at Reside Communities.

“Kay has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share with retirees so we were very excited to have her hosting this special event,” Mr Brown said.

“There’s a lot of information that retirees need to consider before making a decision about their future living options, so this session was a great way for people to have all their questions answered.

“We hand-picked each expert panellist from a range of services to help locals get all the information they need to do retirement right.”

The event ended with a fully catered lunch in Brookland’s new Clubhouse dining area, with guided tours of Brookland’s the community’s newly completed display apartments and 5-star facilities.
